Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Business Administration

The health industry is changing at a rapid pace, and the role of registered nurses with it.

From 2012, ACU will be offering a new Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Business Administration program for students who want to study nursing and meet the evolving business management expectations of health services.
Registered nurses are increasingly moving from bedside practice to middle management roles early in their careers, and are expected to take leadership roles in multi-disciplinary teams. From hospitals to aged care, general practice, private practice and the community, health is increasingly viewed as a business and nurses are required to effectively manage staff and financial resources.

Graduates will be eligible to apply for registration as a nurse, and may employ their skills and knowledge in government and/or private hospitals, rural and remote retrieval services, management, education and research and health promotion, and a wide range of occupations that require an understanding of health and business processes.

Bachelor of Applied Public Health

From 2012, ACU will be offering a Bachelor of Applied Public Health. Perfect for students who are enthusiastic about making a different to the health of individuals and communities, this course is strongly based on community engagement to produce graduates with practical, work-ready skills.

The course is well suited to students who want to prevent illness and promote health through advocacy and policy. The course has a strong foundation and touches on a variety of disciplines including nursing, exercise science and management, as well as a wide range of public health subjects. As a graduate of this course, students will develop the knowledge and skills to contribute to a healthier society.

A BETTER UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE - HEALTH SCIENCES DAY

The Faculty of Health Sciences has restructured University Experience, allowing students to customise the day to match their individual interests. Students can experience a day in the life of a health science student by enrolling in either:
Be an Exercise Scientist for a Day
Be a Student Nurse for a Day
Be a Student Midwife for a Day
Be a Student Paramedic for a Day
Be a Physiotherapist for a Day

University Experience is a free program designed to allow Year 10, 11 and 12 students the opportunity to interact with academic staff and current students, to try out the course they are interested in studying, and to experience a truly hands on sample of life at ACU.

NEW HEALTH SCIENCE FACILTIES

ACU is proud to announce the completion of a new $6 million building on the Brisbane Campus dedicated to exercise science and physiotherapy.

The building houses the School of Exercise Science, the Physiotherapy Research Laboratory, and research facilities and teaching areas for use by both exercise science and physiotherapy.

The purpose-built Research Laboratory is a flexible space designed to allow research projects in all fields of physiotherapy, contributing to the increasing research profile of the University.

The building also includes a Strength and Conditioning Lab and an Exercise Physiology Lab - which provide students with excellent opportunities to learn hands-on skills in a very modern and contemporary space. In addition to the new building, the campus has a fully licensed anatomy lab, purpose built physiotherapy teaching laboratories and an incredibly hi-tech biomechanics lab.

Head of the School of Physiotherapy, Professor Julie Hides, said the building was evidence of ACU’s commitment to its students.

“These new faculties form part of $18 million worth of improvements at the Brisbane Campus to accommodate new physiotherapy and exercise science courses,” she said. “These facilities allow us to provide students with a rich learning experience.”

Star-studded review for ACU

Australian Catholic University (ACU) continues to shine in the areas outlined by its Mission and key values, receiving the maximum five-star rating for Indigenous participation in the 2012 Good Universities Guide.

There are more than 370 Indigenous students studying at ACU, across all five faculties. Many of the courses they are enrolled in have been developed specifically to meet the educational and career needs of Indigenous students – such as the Associate Degree in Indigenous Education, and the Bachelor of Midwifery (Indigenous).
Flexible courses are also available, allowing students to live and work in their own communities, and come to the campus only four weeks a year for face-to-face lectures.

The Good Universities Guide rankings also demonstrated the satisfaction of ACU graduates – with the University receiving an impressive four stars for student demand, domestic teaching quality, getting a full-time job, and student-staff ratio.

Cultural diversity and access by equity groups were two other areas where ACU received high marks – with four and three stars respectively.
