2013 Hawker Scholarship

2013 Hawker Scholarship  
The 2013 C.A.S. Hawker Scholarships open on Monday December 10th and close on Friday 4th January 2013.

The C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship is one of the most generous privately funded scholarships available to undergraduate students in Australia. Each scholarship is valued at up to $45,000 over three years.

The Charles Hawker Scholarship perpetuates the memory of scholar, soldier, pastoralist and statesman Charles Allan Seymour Hawker and commemorates the achievements of one of Australia’s most respected pastoral pioneers.

Governor-General Ms Quentin Bryce AC presented the 2011 scholarships and Governor of South Australia, Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR officiated at the 2012 presentation ceremony.

The scholarships are available to all Australian students. Since 1990 the majority have been awarded to students entering their first year of university study. The Scholarships provide support for a student’s residential expenses in nominated university colleges and halls and may include some university course fees.

Selection is largely based on personal qualities as well as academic ability. Undergraduate Hawker Scholars are able to attend a range of Australian educational institutions.

Scholarships - Australian Defence Force

ADFA Education Award
The Australian Defence Force Academy Education Award is presented annually to Year 12 students in recognition of leadership potential, and academic and sporting achievements exhibited during Year 11. The award comprises of a laptop computer and certificate for students, along with a plaque of recognition for your school. There are up to 100 awards available on behalf of the Navy, Army and Air Force which will be presented to suitable applicants who have applied for entry to ADFA.

To be eligible to apply for the Education Award, students must currently be studying Year 11 subjects that meet both the educational qualifications for admission to the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and single Service requirements (refer to:www.defencejobs.gov.au/education/adfa/howToApply/educationAward.aspx .
Students need to submit an application prior to 28 February in the year they undertake Year 12. However, they are encouraged to apply in Year 11. They may apply for awards to all three Services, however, they will only be assessed for the Education Award against their first preference. If they are successful, they will only receive the award if they are enrolled in Year 12 at the time of the award presentation and meet the age requirements for ADFA entry.

The application process comprises the ADFA entry aptitude test, medical testing and a series of interviews including an Officer Selection Board (OSB).
The ADFA Education Award is unbonded, which means there is no obligation to accept an offer to attend ADFA, nor is the Australian Defence Force obliged to offer appointment to an award winner. A representative of the ADF would present the award to recipients at a school assembly in the second school term of Year 12.

Defence Technical Scholarships
A Defence Technical Scholarship (DTS) is a fantastic opportunity for Year 11 and 12 students with an interest in pursuing a technical trade career after completing Year 12. The DTS rewards technically savvy students for staying on at school and enrolling in specific subjects.

Year 11 recipients will receive $2000, and Year 12 students will receive $3000. Although there is no obligation to join the Navy, Army or Air Force after finishing school, students will be required to tell us why they are interested in an ADF technical trade career as part of the selection process. Tropical North Queensland TAFE is holding a holiday cookery program in the November/December/January school holidays. This 6-week program is a pathway into a cookery apprenticeship. It involves face-to-face theoretical training, simulated practical training in our onsite commercial kitchens, and vocational placement to gain real-life industry experience!

This course is ideal for current Yr 12 students who are selecting post-school training options, or for students who may be considering leaving school at the end of 2012.

Central Queensland University Paramedic Science Week Work Experience Program

University of Queensland MBBS Change of entry requirements

The University of Queensland has recenlty changed its policy relating to the use of the UMAT exam for entry into the MBBS provisional entry for school leaver programs. From semester 1/2013, UQ will no longer require applicants to attain a minimum score of 50 in each of the three subsections of the UMAT.Applicants are still required to sit the UMAT and applicants with OP 1/rank 99 will be selected in order of their UMAT aggregate, however the requirement to attain a minimum score in each of the UMAT subsections no longer applies.

This is important information for students who may wish to add one or more of the UQ MBBS provisional entry for school leaver offerings as a QTAC preference. The final date to add or change preferences for the January offer round is 10 January 2013.

Pre-vocational courses in 2013 - places in Automotive & Construction still available

There are still a number of places available in the following 2013 pre-vocational courses:

PRE-APPRENTICESHIP – AUR20705 – CERTIFICATE II in AUTOMOTIVE MECHANICAL (6 spaces left!)
PRE-APPRENTICESHIP in CARPENTRY – CPC20111 – CERTIFICATE II in CONSTRUCTION (9 spaces left!)

Please see the attached course information brochures for further details regarding these pre-vocational programs.

Successful completion of these programs will provide many opportunities for students in these trade areas. Pre-apprenticeship training provides the skills and knowledge required by industry, and these programs are highly regarded by employers seeking apprentices as they can be assured of a beginning level of knowledge, skills and task awareness.

Entry Requirements
Year 10 or equivalent (desirable).
The minimum entry requirements are a pass in Maths, English and Science at year 10 level, however achievements in other subject areas, work experience etc, will be taken into consideration. There is a minimum age requirement of 15 years.


These pre-apprenticeship programs are ideal for current Yr 12 students who are selecting post-school training options, or for students who may be considering leaving school at the end of 2012.

Music and Sound Production Summer Sememster Courses

Australian AMPED is offering a Certificate IV in Music and Certificate IV in Sound Production run over 10 weeks in summer starting on the 26th of November. This program is designed for students that are looking to get into a Tertiary music program that may be out of reach at present. The courses are an accelerated learning pathway that will guarantee entry to their corresponding Diploma with Australian AMPED and can also be used to support applications at other tertiary facilities.

Places for this program are strictly limited and students must pass an entry exam to qualify (the entry exam counts as recognition of prior learning – RPL). In addition a Certificate III in Music will be offered over 20 weeks that can be entered with basic music skills as a prerequisite. Courses will be run at AMPED facilities on the Sunshine Coast. 2012 RSL Youth Development Program

There are now less than 3 weeks until the RSL Youth Development Program closes for applications. This generous program recognises and rewards the outstanding efforts of this year's grade 10 and 11 students from across Queensland the opportunity to apply and potentially share in over $500,000 in grants.

In 2012, the RSL Youth Development Program will offer 200 grants in the following categories:

·         Academic Achievement (inclusive of Arts, Drama, Dance and Media)

·         Sporting Achievement

·         Community Leadership and Civic Participation

Recipients of the RSL Youth Development Program will receive grants of $2,500 and the top 10% of the highest achieving year 10 and 11 students will receive a higher recognition via a $5,000 grant. Recipients will also have the exclusive opportunity to apply for a scholarship worth 50% of tuition fees to study either a single or combined degree at Bond University after the completion of high school. If you want to go to University next year (and are Australian), you will need a TFN so you can pay less fees and to also defer your fees via a HECS-HELP loan.

Here are a few tips:

·         Closing dates vary for colleges, so it’s important to check the closing dates on the website:

·         The first step once you have chosen your college of first preference is to fill in the online application form:

·         Don't forget to make a note of the Application ID and password.

·         The online application will be received by the college of first preference when you hit ‘submit’.

·         You will then need to visit the website of their college of first preference, as you may have extra forms to fill out for referees, interview requests etc.

You will need to post or email the extra documents including forms specific to the college of first preference, your most recent school results, and photographs. This is also outlined at the end of the online application, and on our How to Apply page.

The University of Melbourne "Dive into Design" Summer School

The Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning invites secondary students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to take part in an annual four day workshop at the University of Melbourne during the school holiday in December.

Dive into Design introduces students to a range of design skills, programs and concepts, currently used in architecture and design tertiary courses and in the industry, including:

·         Photoshop and SketchUp
·         Architectural drawings and graphics
·         Spatial drawing
·         Urban design
·         Model making
·         Landscape architecture

So what are the criteria to get involved? No prior skills or knowledge is expected. You just need to have an interest in architecture and design.

All sessions are highly interactive and led by experienced tutors, lecturers or industry professionals.

Rural, interstate and overseas students are encouraged to take part in the workshop and live on campus at Trinity College, on the university's campus, for the week.

Experience University life first hand in a safe and friendly environment and gain the practical knowledge they need to make key decisions about their future.

CQUNIVERSITY PARAMEDIC SCIENCE WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM

Students interested in Paramedic Science have the opportunity to attend the CQUniversity Paramedic Science Work Experience Program at CQUniversity Rockhampton in December. Year 10, 11 and 12 students who are interested in a career in Paramedic Science, are invited to apply to attend.
Students will learn what it would be like to work as a paramedic with hands-on activities in the state-of-the-art paramedic training facilities. The program includes simulation skills training, a field trip incorporating a range of emergency services and a simulation challenge.
