Cairns TAFE Mid Year Courses

TAFE has some Prevocational programs being offered in second semester this year.  One in the Engineering/Automotive trades and the other in the Commercial Cookery industry.  Prevocational programs are a very effective way of gaining entry to your career of choice.  
This information may be useful for any grade 11 or 12 student that may be struggling at school, or a school leaver who is unable to find work.  Please See Mrs McPhail in E Block or Ms Seden in No Block if you are interested.

Information about the engineering/automotive trades is as follows:

 39172QLD Engineering Pre Trade (Mechanical) and AUR20705 Automotive Mechanical (Heavy Vehicle Road Transport) Pre Apprenticeship Programs.

Description

This program is designed for people interested in engineering industries such as mining, marine, sugar, engineering and involved in a wide range of work which can include maintenance, servicing, installation, repair of mechanical equipment such as trucks, heavy equipment, engines, conveyer systems, pumps, transmissions, hydraulics and manufacture of machinery parts using welders, lathers, milling machines and a wide range of power tools.

Pathways and Opportunities

Successful completion of this program provides a pathway to an apprenticeship as an engineering tradesperson – Fitting & Turning, Diesel Fitting or Automotive Heavy Vehicle Road Transport.
Fitters/Turners shape steel and other materials using a variety of manual, automated and computer controlled machines such as drills, lathes, grinders, and milling machines. They use hand and power tools and precision measuring instruments to manufacture, assemble, fit and repair parts and machinery.

Diesel Fitters/Heavy Equipment Mechanics and Automotive (Heavy vehicle road transport) are employed mainly by machinery dealers, heavy vehicles repairers, road transport firms, bus companies and the mining industry. Public and privatised authorities such as those concerned with defence, communications, energy supply, public works and transport also employ Diesel Fitters/Mechanics.

Entry Requirements

The minimum age requirement is 16 years. The minimum entry requirement is a pass in Maths, English and Science at a year 10 level however achievements in other subject areas and work experience will be taken into consideration.
A numeracy and literacy assessment will be conducted to identify and areas a student may require learning support.

The approximate cost to complete this qualification. Standard: $1,550.00. Concession: $1,112.25.

Tropical North Queensland TAFE’s Certificate II in Hospitality (Kitchen Operations) is suitable for those who wish to pursue a career in Commercial Cookery. This course will provide you with a range of skills, knowledge and competencies to be a cook and also offers exemptions for part of an apprenticeship in Commercial Cookery.
