Careers in Sport

Are you interested in a career in sport?

The following information has been taken from MyCareerMatch:

A career in sports is the top aspiration of thousands of young people across the country. You don’t have to be an athlete to get a job in sports, and you don’t have to be the one in a million who becomes a professional to get into the game. In fact, the range of job types and sectors in the sports, fitness and athletics fields are open to all kinds of skills, attributes and abilities.

The opportunities are wider than most people think when discussing a career in sport. Careers Advisors and Councillors should be cognisant that sport is an industry and within that industry there are almost unlimited career opportunities whose job description doesn’t begin with the word “sport”.
Aside from the competing sports person, the support in cast can be segmented into these career types:
  1. Health and Fitness …comprises physical therapists, psychologists, nutritionists, doctors, strength and conditioning coaches and rehabilitation therapists.
  2. Coaching and Training …can be former professional sports people or people who have qualified to coach a particular discipline, athletic trainers, tacticians and data analysts.
  3. Science …includes exercise science, biomechanics, sports engineers, clothing footwear and equipment specialists, injury prevention and recovery specialists, musculoskeletal specialists.
  4. Sports Management and Administration… Fortunately for job seekers, many professional sports are big businesses. They need administrators and managers to run. Everything from a stadium management, food and ticket sales, merchandise sales, managing equipment, video and scoreboard, off and on-field umpires, rules officials and linespersons. Sport is business and the business of sport is full of opportunities.
  5. Media and Marketing… is essential to sports and requires talented people to live stream, promote, produce, announce, write, commentate and photograph. Sport employs every medium to engage with spectators and fans. Behind the scene, business and marketing managers run everything from events, hospitality, sponsorship, media announcements, player information and transfers to functions, awards, community and school engagement programs.
