Scholarships
Recently USC awarded 66 new scholarships to students commencing study in 2011. These students can now count on financial support while they study full time at USC. Many of them now won’t need to work as many hours to support themselves, allowing them to focus on their studies and their future. For students commencing study in 2012 around 100 scholarships will be on offer, ranging in value from a $1,000 lump sum payment to $12,000 over three years.

Headstart Program
USC’s Headstart program allows students to choose from more than 90 courses to work towards entry to a USC degree, expand their knowledge and skills, and interact with university staff and students, all while they’re still in year

Parent Resource
Transitioning from high school to university can be a balancing act for students, who often rely on their parents for support and guidance. USC has a wealth of online resources to help parents assist their student to make informed decisions about study and career options.

Travel Scholarships Take Dreams Global
If you can't wait to explore the world and are also considering university when you finish school, maybe USC’s Global Opportunities (GO) Program will be of interest to you. The GO Program will allow them to study and travel at the same time, with the support of USC and access to significant financial support.

As 45 students discovered this semester, the scholarships offered through USC’s GO Program can significantly ease the expense of travelling overseas to one of our 70 partner institutions.

Design student Lisa Lonergan of Sippy Downs (pictured left at an award ceremony at USC), spent five months in New York last year studying at Long Island’s Adelphi University. Describing New York as “breathtaking”, Lisa said her trip wouldn’t have been possible without the $8,500 in financial assistance she received from USC.

“My $3000 Overseas Study Grant was amazing,” she said.

Lisa also received a $5,500 Commonwealth Government loan, and said the highlight of her GO Program experience was “feeling so independent and getting out there and doing it for myself”.

In addition to the financial support offered through USC, often the host institutions or host countries have additional scholarships available. For example USC students studying in Japan may be entitled to the Japan Student Services Organisation (JASSO) scholarship, awarded by the Japanese Government.

USC is a leading institution in Queensland in terms of percentages of graduates who spent part of their degree studying overseas, which was recognised by the 2009 Queensland Education and Training Award for Excellence in Outward Mobility.

You can find out more about studying overseas with USC’s GO Program on the USC website.

The Information for Parents webpage is designed specifically to provide the crucial information they’ll need to know, including uni terminology, study commitments, types of assessment and much more.

If parents are looking for tips for survival and strategies to best assist their student to succeed, there is a  USC parent Denise on Facebook. As a parent of three university students, she offers insight, advice and answers to their questions about uni.

Scholarships are not only for the academically gifted – many of USC’s scholarships are awarded based on the whole student, not just their OP. We also take into account such things as, financial hardship, difficult personal circumstances, the need to relocate to study and the contribution the student has made to their school or community.

All students thinking of including USC on their preferences with QTAC should apply for our scholarships.

The closing date for scholarships this year is the final day of school for Year 12 students – November 18, 2011. More information about USC's scholarships and bursaries is available at: http://www.usc.edu.au/Students/Future/FinancialAssistance/ScholarshipsBursariesPrizes/
