Pathways and Opportunities
The Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation at Tropical North Queensland TAFE will provide
graduates with the skills and experience to gain employment as Outdoor Leaders
Leadership settings can range from traditional outdoor education programs to adventure
tourism operations.

Outdoor recreation is a major growth area in both the tourism and the outdoor industries.
People skilled in this area can develop careers with outdoor education centres and schools,
adventure tourism operators, adventure travel companies, outdoor equipment suppliers,
tourist resorts running adventure activities, and as specialist activity guides.

Entry requirements
It is a recommendation that applicants have completed Year 12 or equivalent. Students must
also hold a current first aid certificate (equivalent to HLTFA301C) prior to program
commencement. It is recommended that potential students have some previous experience
of outdoor activities.

Program Commitment
The Certificate IV Outdoor Recreation Program involves 3 * 4 - 5 week residential training
blocks, online study, and industry based experience. During the residential blocks training will
take place 5 days per week. At least 15 days will be spent in the field and there will be
approx 10 nights camping. As the program is taught in a sequential and interdependent
manner, attendance at all classes is crucial.

While Physical fitness is not a selection criteria for the course, students should be aware of,
and prepared for some physically demanding aspects of the program.  Students will
engage in adventure activities such as bushwalking, canoeing, orienteering, abseiling,
and high ropes courses. These activities, whilst conducted as safely as possible, have
a degree of inherent risk associated with them.  Students and/or guardians need
to be aware of these risks prior to enrolment.
