$37.2 million boost for engineering at USC

Engineering is about to take a giant leap forward at the University of the Sunshine Coast following USC’s success in winning a $30 million grant from the Commonwealth Government.

From 2015 civil and mechanical engineering students will immerse themselves in life-size 3D simulated objects in the visualisation theatres; and use high-tech data capture equipment to record demonstrations on the 1.2m thick pressurised concrete reaction floor. Wearing 3D glasses with position sensors that locate the wearer in relation to the object, students could experience the design of a building by walking around its 3D simulation, appreciating it from all angles, among many other exciting uses.

From the classroom to the courtroom, USC students will soon be studying towards careers as legal practitioners in private, corporate and government practice.

The ever-growing list of programs on offer at USC is set to rise again in 2014, with the planned introduction of the four-year Bachelor of Laws* and a range of double degrees.

From Semester 1 2014, the first cohort of law students at USC are planned to be undertaking the exciting new program, which will also be offered in conjunction with Arts, Business, Commerce (Accounting), Creative Writing, Journalism, Science and Social Science.

What’s all the DRAMA about?

A new study area has joined the spotlight at USC this year, with the introduction of the Drama major.

Budding performance makers, drama teachers and arts workers have flooded in to secure a place in this highly anticipated study area. Studying a broad range of topics, from dramatic languages and performance skills, to event management and literary studies, the program will produce multi-skilled graduates ready to participate in the performing arts, media or event industries.

The major was developed in consultation with local drama educators, industry, council and community groups.

The Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Business, Professor Joanne Scott, said it will focus on skill development in performance-making and performance, theatre direction, event management and drama workshop facilitation exploring social issues.

Students can take a dramatic step towards this eight-course major by applying for the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Business or Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science. A minor is also available to students from other areas of study, allowing them to study four courses and get a taste for the dramatic arts.

Scholarships to boost athletes off the blocks

On your marks, get set, apply! A new $6,000 sports scholarship was introduced at USC this semester in a bid to help local athletes achieve their sporting dreams while studying.

The scholarship will be awarded annually at a value of $2,000 a year for up to three years and students can be studying any program at USC while performing their sport.

USC is endorsed as an Elite Athlete Friendly University (EAFU), with advanced sport and exercise science laboratories which are accredited with the Australian Institute of Sport in their National Sport Science Quality Assurance program (NSSQA).

While applications for Semester 1 2013 have closed, the closing date will be moving earlier in future years, so keep an eye on the scholarships website for updates.

USC also offers many other scholarships to commencing and continuing students. In 2013, scholarships were awarded to students from 30 different high schools to the value of nearly $400,000. The application period for most scholarships offered in 2014 is from August until October 2013.

Learn Leadership Skills

CHRYSALIS is a unique opportunity for students to learn leadership skills and network with other likeminded students. The week long summer school combines an exciting academic program with enriching extra-curricular activities and attracts students from Australia and around the world.

The theme of this year’s program, Leadership in the Age of Social Media, will look at how social media has changed the way leaders engage with their communities. Students will have the opportunity to hear from and meet eminent community leaders from Australia and abroad as part of a series of lectures and workshops focussing on the program’s theme.

They will also engage in PierSim, a 3D virtual environment, which expands their communication and leadership skills while highlighting the importance of ethics in decision-making.

Young people (at least 16 years) entering their final year of secondary school who are interested in examining some of the major issues of our time.

What's involved?

• A week-long Summer School combining an exciting academic program during the day with enriching extra-curricular activities in the evenings.
• Participants will reside at Emmanuel College on the St Lucia campus of The University of Queensland.
• Each week-day morning, participants will hear from dynamic and eminent key-note speakers in their fields in a series of lectures and workshops held at Emmanuel College.
• Afternoon sessions will occur at the IES campus in inner-city Brisbane where the group will engage in an on-line leadership simulation conducted within the open sims platform. The experience will involve participants in decision making in a dynamic business environment that will require them to demonstrate leadership skills within a team.
• Each night there will be a fun and stimulating program of events held at the College and the University. A Closing Dinner and Graduation Ceremony will bring the week to a conclusion.

Cost of Summer School

7 day program: $1200

The Summer School fee of $1200 is inclusive of accommodation at Emmanuel College, all meals, transport to IES and field trip to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, post Summer School activities, extra-curricular cultural, sporting and social activities, pastoral care and supervision.

Defence Work Experience Program: HMAS Cairns

As part of the Defence Work Experience Program, HMAS Cairns are offering a work experience placement from 18 - 21 June and there are still a couple of positions available on this placement.

This work experience opportunity would suit students who have a demonstrated interest in a Navy career and can support this as part of their application (selection criteria 1).  HMAS Cairns offers a high quality and interactive work experience program that includes participating in Navy Physical Training sessions, visiting ships, participating in lessons and activities associated with a range of Navy careers, tour of base and unit facilities etc.

Defence Force Recruiting Essay

Defence Force Recruiting Cairns has a number of copies of the book “The Australian Army, a Brief History” (See attached image). This full colour publication contains 96 pages of images and information about the Australian Army and we would like to share this with students who have an interest in either the Australian Army or in the Australian Defence Force on the whole.

Students should describe in 500 words or less what job they would like to do in the Defence Force and outline a day in the life in this role.

Entries are open to all secondary school students in the Defence Force Recruiting Cairns Area regardless of age. Winners will be determined by staff members at Defence Force Recruiting Cairns. In total there are 30 copies of “The Australian Army, a Brief History” to be won.

Entries should include the students Name, Age, and School. The closing date for the competition is 24^th June 2013 and Winners will be notified through their respective schools by 22^nd July 2013.

Australian Defence Force Work Experience

4 Regiment (Royal Australian Artillery) are offering a work experience placement from 13 - 17 May and there are still positions available.

4 Regt always offer a high quality and interactive work experience program that includes participating in unit Physical Training, weapons familiarisation and testing at the Weapons Training Simulation System, a trip to Townsville Field Training Area at High Range to observe artillery live fire, lessons and activities in navigation, patrolling, map reading, battle simulation, tour of base and unit facilities etc etc.
