The University of Queensland 'Getting Ready for University' - Info Sessions for Year 10 parents, guardians and carers

As a parent or guardian you play a vital role in helping your children make the best choices about their future and year 10 is the best time to start.

When teenagers select their senior subjects it is important that they select the right prerequisites for the university programs they are interested in.

Your child’s dream is our mission and these interactive group sessions are designed to give you the necessary information to assist your child in making an informed choice about their future. All our interactive sessions are hosted by recent UQ professional staff graduates and run for approximately one hour with plenty of time set aside for any questions you may have.

The University of Queensland - Registrations now open for the Australian Computational & Linguistics Olympiad

The Olympiad is an exciting team-based national competition for high school students from years 9 to 12. It challenges students to develop their own strategies for solving problems in fascinating real languages.

This year, the winning team of the National Competition is eligible to represent Australia at the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL), to be held in Dublin, Ireland.

The University of Queensland - Special entry into the Bachelor of Dental Science for rural or remote students

Rural areas of Australia often have limited access to educational opportunities and dental services. To assist in addressing this ongoing challenge, 8 per cent of Bachelor of Dental Sciences (Honours) places in UQ's annual intake are now designated to applicants who come from a rural background.

What classifies as rural is determined by the Australian Standard Geographical Classification Remoteness Area system (ASGC-RA), which also categorizes various levels of remoteness, identified by their Remoteness Areas (RAs) rating. Students will need to live in a remote area for a set amount of time to be eligible.

This rural background sub quota for the Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) will be available for students within the RA2 - RA5 category. This will include most Queensland regional cities, as well as rural areas near Ipswich and some parts of the Gold and Sunshine Coast hinterlands. Students can check the classification of their homes on the Department of Health website.

Approved rural background applicants must still meet all the entry requirements of the Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) program, including sitting the UMAT exam. However, to assist with meeting the ranking requirements, rural background applicants will be competing against a smaller cohort of applicants (for a smaller number of places) where the standard UMAT cut offs may not apply.

The University of Queensland Update Exercise and Nutrition prerequisaite changes

Exercise & Nutrition Science - New prerequisite for Semester One 2018

From Semester One 2018 the Bachelor of Exercise and Nutrition Science (QTAC Code: 720102) will require an additional prerequisite of Maths A, B or C. This is in addition to the existing prerequisites of English and one of either Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

This change, first announced in 2015, will ensure that prospective students have the knowledge and skills required to succeed in a health science program at UQ.

Any prospective students missing subject prerequisites are encouraged to pursue pathway or bridging programs. More information on these options can be found here.

Queensland Youth Parliament

The following information has been forwarded to Smithfield State High School regarding the QCAA-accredited program, Queensland Youth Parliament (QYP).

QYP is the largest non-partisan forum for youth aged 15-25.

We have 93 youth members from every electorate around the state, including four fully funded Indigenous seats. Our program provides a fundamental link between young people and the Queensland State Government. The bills that are written and debated in Youth Parliament are then considered by the actual State Parliament.

Our program is ultimately one of the best opportunities for young people to have their voices heard and create change in their community. The issues young people face around the state deserve to be listened to and solved.

We are seeking young people from your electorate to stand up for themselves and their communities. They don't have to be a great public speaker to apply, just as long as they're passionate.

We would love to see students from your school nominate. Nominations close 27 February.
